Albenza belongs to the drug family Anthelmintics. Its generic name is Albendazole. It is an anti-worm medication i.e. it is used to treat infections caused by the worms. Albendazole works by preventing the worm from absorbing glucose sugar, so that the worm loses energy and dies i.e. it prevents newly hatched insect larvae worms from growing or multiplying in your body.

Albendazole is used to treat certain infections caused by worms such as Hydatid disease echinococcosis, pork tapeworm neurocysticercosis, dog tapeworm and Infection of the nervous system caused by pork tapeworms. However, Albendazole can be used in certain patients who may show the following infections, such as: Tapeworms taeniasis, Trichostrongyliasis, Capillariasis, Cutaneous larva migrans, Whipworms trichuriasis, Common roundworms ascariasis, Hookworms ancylostomiasis and necatoriasis, Pinworms enterobiasis or oxyuriasis, Strongyloidiasis etc.

Albendazole may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide. Also remember, Albendazole is available only with your doctors prescription.

It is advisable to take Albenza medication exactly as directed by doctor or pharmacists or your health care professional. Consult your doctor about having or consuming grapefruit while the Albenza course is on.

Some side effects can be seen while consuming Albenza medication. If you notice any of the symptoms listed below or any other symptoms which seem severe/persistent consult immediate medical help. Symptoms may be: muscle / joints aches and pains, lower back pain , fever, seizures , blurred vision, chills, severe diarrhea, yellowing of eyes/skin, sore throat, unusual weakness/tiredness, redness/loosening /blistering/peeling of the skinincluding the inside the mouth, difficulty breathing,
skin rash/hives/itching etc.

Consult your doctor about these symptoms and get treated as soon as possible.

Inform your doctor about any other prescribed, non-prescribed, herbal products, health supplements or any other medications that you may be taking in any other form. So, that doctor can decide the exact dosage of Albenza for you.
Also inform your doctor if you are allergic to the formulation of this medication or any other medication in any other form. They may be: Clozapine, Warfarin, Aminophyline, Planzapine, Dexamethasone, Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Mexiletine, Ropinirole, Tacrine, Caffeine, Cimetidine, Carbamazepine, Theophyline, Grapefruit juice etc.

In case of overdose call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
If the suffering patient has collapsed or is not breathing call local emergency services at 911. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly.

If you need to undergo any kind of surgery, do not forget to inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine. Also inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breast feeding or planning to conceive or get conceived during the course.

If you miss a dose of this medicine, consult with your doctor immediately. However, do not double dose it, to make up for the missed dose.

Albenza effectively treats parasitic worm infections. It can also be used in the treatment of Neurocysticercosis, Hydatid Disease etc. However, the effectiveness of Albendazole in the therapy of Alveolar Hydatid disease caused by Echinococcus Multilocularis has not been clearly demonstrated in clinical studies.

Check Expiry date without fail. Albenza tablets should be stored at room temperature between 68 - 77 degrees F 20 - 25 degrees C away from light. Avoid storing the medicine in the bathroom. Also, keep it away from direct light, heat and moisture. Heat and moisture cause the break down of the medicine. Keep all medicines away from women, newborns, children and pets.

Following precautions must be taken during consuming generic Albenza:

1. Inform your doctor know, if you are suffering from some kind of severe diseases or had ever suffered from low white blood cell count, Liver disease, recent chemotherapy, Biliary tract disease, anemia etc. or any other problem.

2. Never allow anyone to use your drugs without the doctor’s permission as doing so may harm them.

3. Inform your gynecologist, if you are pregnant or trying to conceive before using this drug.

4. Let the doctor also know if you are in-taking any prescribed or non prescribed medicines, health supplements etc. for any other condition.

5. Nursing mothers should take advice from their doctors to use this medication.

6. This medicine may cause blurred vision, dizziness or drowsiness. So people who drive or operate heavy machinery have to be very alert. If possible take rest at home on advice.

7. Keep the medicine out of reach of women, newborns, children and pets.
