BrahmiBacopa monnieri is a small, creeping herb that contains the alkaloids brahmine, herpestine, and a mixture of three bases. It also contains the saponins monnierin, hersaponin, bacoside A and bacoside B.
The entire plant constitutes the well-known drug Brahmi. The drug is astringent, bitter and cooling, and reportedly improves the intellect. It is used in Ayurveda for the treatment of asthma, hoarseness, insanity and epilepsy and is also a potent nerve tonic, cardiotonic, aperient and diuretic. It acts as an anti-anxiety agent and also calms restlessness in children and is used in several mental disorders.
The alcoholic extract of the plant is useful as a tranquilizer in rats and dogs. It is also useful for smooth musculature relaxation and as an antispasmodic. The alcoholic extract of the plant effected cerebral amino acid levels in mice, acetyl cholinesterase activity of mice, cerebral tissues and mouse brain. The extract was also anti-cancer. Treatment with the plant produced improvement in maze learning in albino rats.
Brahmi is a nervine tonic that enhances learning ,academic performance and improves mental ability.
