There are several methods to avoid unnecessary pregnancy and taking Triphasil tablets is one of the methods to prevent pregnancy. The Triphasil i.e. Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol medicine is an estrogen and progestin combination contraceptive pill, which is used to prevent pregnancy. The Triphasil medication prevents the ovulation, which is a process of the release of an egg from the ovary.

Moreover, it may also be used to regulate the menstrual cycle or to treat symptoms of menopause. However, it can also treat other conditions as determined by your doctor. Do not use the Triphasil medication for other purposes on your own, without consulting your doctor or the health care provider.

Before taking Triphasil ask your pharmacist or doctor for a copy of the manufacturer’s information for the patient and read it carefully. Talk to your doctor about all the possible risks of taking Triphasil medication. Do not let anyone else take your medication, especially a woman who is or may become pregnant or recently had a baby.

If you miss one dose, take it as soon as you remember and then take the next pill at the regular time as usual. You may take 2 tablets in one day. If you miss two doses days in a row, take 2 tablets the day you remember and 2 tablets the next day then continue with your regular schedule. Whenever 1 or 2 doses are missed, you should use a second method of contraception for the next 7 days in addition to taking the pills. If you miss three doses in a row you should notify your physician or other health care professional for instructions. You will probably need to throw away the rest of the tablets in that cycle pack and start over. Another method of contraception should be used until at least 7 doses have been taken in the new cycle. Missing a pill can cause spotting or light bleeding. Make sure that no more than 7 days pass at the end of the 21 day cycle before you start your next pack of pills.

Follow the directions given by the doctor exactly and also read the prescription label carefully.

However, severe side effects are relatively rare in women, who are healthy and do not smoke while they are taking oral contraceptives.

The following symptoms or side effects may be related to blood clots and require immediate medical or emergency help - leg arm or groin pain, stomach pain severe,
chest pain, dizziness or fainting spells, severe or sudden headaches, vision or speech problems, coughing up blood, sudden loss of coordination especially on one side of the body, weakness or numbness in the arms or legs especially on one side of the body,
swelling of the hands feet or ankles or rapid weight gain, sudden shortness of breath etc. Hence, contact your doctor or your health care provider immediately and get treated accordingly.

Inform your doctor if you experience any of these side effects or any new side effects occur which appear too bothersome to you.

Inform your doctor if you are allergic to the formulation of this medication or any other medication in any other form and also inform your doctor about any other medication you may be taking in any other form. Also inform about all other medicines you are taking including non-prescription medicines nutritional supplements or herbal products.

Triphasil may interact with the caffeine, aprepitant, foods, varied medications, carbamazepine, hydrocortisone, modafinil, grapefruit juice, clofibrate, nefazodone, selegiline, prednisolone, St. Johns wort, mycophenolate, mineral oil, oxcarbazepine, soy isoflavones supplements, theophylline, phenytoin, doxercalciferol, cyclosporine, dantrolene, warfarin, topiramate, tamoxifen, raloxifene, medicines for mental depression, medicines for diabetes including troglitazone and pioglitazone, medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems such as diazepam or temazepam, ritonavir or other medicines for the treatment of the HIV virus or AIDS, antibiotics or medicines for infections especially rifampin, barbiturate medicines for producing sleep or treating seizures convulsions, bosentan etc.

It is also important to inform your health care professional, if you are a frequent user of drinks with alcohol or caffeine or if you smoke or if you use any kind of illegal drugs as these things may affect the way your medicine works. Hence, check before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

If the suffering patient has collapsed or is not breathing call local emergency services at 911. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly.

Symptoms of overdose may include the following conditions such as - vomiting, nausea and vaginal bleeding etc.

Do not allow any other person to use your medication without getting doctor’s prescription themselves and also avoid using this medicine for other health conditions on your own. Keep the medicine away from the children and pets.

28-day schedule -

Follow the same directions as above for the first 21 days of the schedule. If you miss 1 of the last 7 pills, you can either double the dose or skip it but it is important to start the next month’s cycle on the scheduled day.

91-day schedule –

If you miss one dose for the first 84 days of the schedule, take it as soon as you remember. Take the next pill at your regular time as usual which means you may take 2 tablets in one day. If you miss 2 doses days in a row, take 2 tablets on the day you remember and 2 tablets the next day and then keep continuing with your regular schedule. You could become pregnant if you have sex in the 7 days, after you miss 2 doses in a row. You should use another method of birth control during the 7 days, after you restart your pills. If you miss 3 doses days in a row, you will not take any of the 3 pills that you missed. Restart taking your pills for the actual day you restart.

For example - if you resume taking the pill on Thursday, take the pill under Thursday and do not take the missed pills. Keep taking 1 pill every day until you have completed all of the remaining pills in the pack. You may experience bleeding during the week following the missed pills. You could become pregnant, if you have sex in the 7 days after you miss 3 doses in a row. You should use another method of birth control during the 7 days after you restart your pills. If you miss any of the last 7 pills throw away the missed pills. You will not need a back-up method of birth control. Keep taking the scheduled pills until the pack is finished.

In case, if you miss a dose of an emergency contraceptive prescription or vomit the dose within an hour of taking it you must contact your health care professional for instructions. Do not double your doses in any case without consulting your doctor.

Ethinyl Estradiol / Levonorgestrel products are effective as oral contraceptives i.e. birth control pills. These products combine natural or synthetic estrogens and progestin’s similar to the natural sex hormones i.e. estrogen and progesterone produced in a woman’s body. Ethinyl Estradiol is an estrogen and Levonorgestrel is a progestin. These products can prevent ovulation and pregnancy. In general, a combination of estrogen and progestin works better than a single-ingredient product.

However, it may also be used to treat some other medical conditions which may be determined by your doctor accordingly.

This medication may be prescribed for other uses also, so ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information about the Triphasil medication.

Triphasil medication should be stored at 15-30°C and 59-86°F and at cool and dry place. Check Expiry date without fail. Keep all medicines away from women, newborns, children and pets. Also, keep it away from heat, dampness and direct light. In any case, do not store the Triphasil tablets in the bathroom.

Following precautions must be taken during consuming generic Triphasil:

1. It is very important for the patient to know that before using Triphasil they must inform their health care professional if they have ever had a history of or are currently suffering from any kind of severe diseases.

2. Also acknowledge your doctor if you need to undergo any kind of surgery, including dental surgery or need an x-ray procedure that uses contrast agents. So, inform your doctor immediately about it, so that the doctor can decide whether to continue taking Triphasil or stop it during the surgery.

3. Let the doctor also know if you are in-taking or are planning to take any prescribed or non prescribed medicines, health supplements or any OTC medications, vitamins etc.

4. Do not use the Triphasil medication, if you have any kind of allergy to it or to any ingredients of it and tell your doctor or pharmacist about the allergy and get treated.

5. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breast feeding before taking Triphasil medication. Hence, inform your doctor immediately when you plan to conceive, or become pregnant during the course.

6. Do not share the drug with others unless they are prescribed by the doctor themselves. And if your symptoms of side effects do not improve in few weeks or if they become worse and bothersome, check these conditions immediately with your doctor.

7. Please, use the medicine in the prescribed amount and do not overdose it or use it for the longer period of time. Do not discontinue on your own and consult your doctor before doing so to avoid further problems.

8. Moreover, visit your doctor or health care provider for regular check ups for your progress and do have a complete check-up every 6 to 12 months. If you have any unusual vaginal bleeding, contact your doctor immediately and get treated accordingly. In case, you miss a period, there is a possibility of pregnancy which must be considered. Inform the same to your doctor or health care professional as soon as you can.
